April 2016 saw 99 new grant makers set up (the average over the past 12 months is 96.7). 70 are included in the Trust List and almost a third were identified through prospect research.
As always, education, relief and health feature prominently. This month saw a significant rise in medical support with seven new grant makers focusing on patient support or research. Three new grant makers had a specific focus on Ghana, with another three focusing on conservation. Perhaps more indicative of our modern times, one new grant maker focuses on the economy and society, whilst another looks to help entrepreneurs through education and benevolence.
Several new grant makers are significantly wealthy, with one connected to a distillery, a property tycoon worth well over £1bn and a host of others worth over £50m.
In addition, a Foundation has been set up to help universities, charities and other higher education bodies support students, whilst a new Institute has been set up by a hedge fund manager worth $23 billion.
