January 2016 saw 76 new grant makers set up. This is against an average of 110 new grant makers per month over the past four years. April 2015 was the only month last year that fell below this, with just 70 registrations.
As always, education, relief and health feature prominently. This month we also saw a spread of additional charities covering animal welfare and conservation, sport, the Arts in general and specifically Russian avant-garde.
Whilst there are fewer new grant makers, there is certainly no shortage of interesting and very wealthy new foundations. One was set up by the son of a Taiwanese arms dealer who has a murder warrant back in Taiwan. He spends his time between North California, Switzerland and London and has a wide range of interests, particularly philanthropy and the theatre.
Another distinguished investment manager has just set up his own family trust, but has given little away as to what they might support. Several other individuals are worth well over £100m.
Finally, a billionaire that features up high on the Forbes Rich List has set up a foundation.
